Bitcoin Explained – A Beginners Understanding

When I first heard of Bitcoin I was confused which made me uninterested in the topic.  As the cryptocurrency gained traction I decided I needed to have bitcoin explained to me.  This piece helps those new to the movement understand, this is Bitcoin Explained.

Bitcoin Explained: What is Bitcoin?

In 2009 the cryptocurrency Bitcoin was released to the world.  Since then, Bitcoin has proven to have capacity and value in the marketplace.  It has increased our ability to exchange with one another.

As a decentralized system bitcoin works through autonomous computers and functions outside any one institution.  Imagine a worldwide network of computers that is one hundred times more powerful than Google and you have bitcoins computation power.  Unless the Internet is shut down all at once, everywhere, the operating system will always be functional.

One of the allures of this technology is it cuts out the middleman i.e. the banks, yet maintains an infrastructure that allows strangers to deal with one another.  Unlike other currencies on the market the Bitcoin ledger is fully public and universal.  Bitcoin alleviates blind trust in using banking institutions and instead relies on cryptographic proof as a means to instill trust.  This transparent ledger of accounting is known as the Blockchain.  The Blockchains common ledger ensures all transactions are visible which maintains the integrity and accuracy of the currency.

In the most simplistic of terms our current economic system, the dollar is an IOU.  When we use dollars we are agreeing upon the valued amount a good or service holds.  We then exchange a paper note for that good or service.  Our belief in this system is what gives the money value.  The entire system hinges on societies willingness to accept the paper payment to settle a debt.

Once the dollar was formally backed by hard money, specifically gold and silver.  The value of these metals comes from the scarcity of the metal versus the demand for the precious metal.  Bitcoins, like gold and silver are market driven.  The value fluctuates with the supply and demand for bitcoin.  Dollars or metals are simply a means of exchange in which both parties know the relative worth and value of the items being exchanged.

The current middleman, the bank, will allow accounts to be over drafted if money is not in an account.  The Blockchain instantly verifies that the funds are available.  Funds are pulled if available and if not available then the transaction is denied.  In this way bitcoin essentially functions as cash as all money being rendered must be immediately available.  There are no overdraft fees, merchant processing fees or charge backs.  Once bitcoin is sent, only through a secondary transaction can the money be agreed to be refunded.  A new payment must be issued back to the payor essentially acting as a “refund”.

The reason you do not have bitcoin yet is because you don’t fully trust it.  Instead your trust is in a debt based fiat system that is all but bankrupt and on the edge of collapse.  Federal reserve notes require a lot more trust because currently money can be printed from thin air with nothing backing it which can lead to hyperinflation.

Bitcoin Explained: Where does bitcoin come from?

Mining is a term you will often hear when talking to others about bringing bitcoin into existence, yet, mining it is a misnomer.  “Mining” is a term used for simplicity.  A bitcoin springs into existence when a “miner” solves and confirms a random mathematical problem, the reward is the bitcoin which is released to the miner.  The problems are increasingly more and more difficult to solve, taking more computing power to find a bitcoin and the bitcoins themselves also grow in scarcity.

To earn the block and the associated bitcoins the winning computer must match a hash in the algorithm which changes every ten minutes.  Those computer systems with the fastest hashing power have a better chance of solving the algorithm and mining the bitcoin.

Mining bitcoin makes me think of the Mario Brothers game.  With his hammer Mario goes through the game breaking through bricks and rock to attain the coins that lie on the other side.  He races through the game working to get all the coins he can possibly mine.  Once the coins are attained Mario celebrates winning the level by pulling the flag pole signaling the conclusion of that mission.  The fireworks go off and he levels up.  Each consecutive level increases in difficulty.  The grand finale comes when he has solved all the games problems and he retires with the princess to live happily ever after free from the tyranny of the dragon.

The open sourced software that the creator Satoshi Yakamoto invented has a self correcting mechanism which tweaks the algorithms difficulty so that bitcoin will be consistently mined every ten minutes until the year 2140.  In the program Yakamoto also stipulated that every four years would be a halving year.  So in 2009 every ten minutes fifty bitcoin entered the economy; when 2012 rolled around twenty-five bitcoin would be added to the economy every ten minutes and next year in July of 2016 twelve and a half bitcoins will be mined every ten minutes.  The halving process will continue until every bitcoin has been uncovered.

When a block is confirmed this is when the reward is given aka the bitcoins are released.  The block is then sealed and added to the chain.  None of the information within that block can be changed or deleted.  The Blockchains on going permanent ledger of all transactions is continuously being built.

Since transactions cannot be changed or deleted bitcoins can not be double spent.  Each transaction has a time-stamp of the purchase which is recorded and irreversible.  If someone tries to double spend the system deems the transaction as illegitimate due to the chronological structuring and verification built into the Blockchain.

.

To send or receive bitcoin you must have a public key consisting of letters and numbers that identifies a wallet.  A wallet can be attained and used without giving any personal identifying information of the holder of the said wallet.  This key or address is how people buy and sell goods outside of the monetary system. One of the largest forums for wallets in the Bitcoin community comes from CoinBase.  Signing up for a wallet is easy, click this link to get your wallet today.

.

Bitcoin Explained: How do I get bitcoin?

At one time a personal computer could easily attain bitcoins through mining.  Now that the computations are increasing in difficulty the individual is having a rough time mining any bitcoins.  Mining pools are becoming popular as they pool the individuals resources and divvy out the intake according to each members contribution to the computation power.  For more information on this topic visit BitcoinMine.Club

If you are not mining bitcoin then you must sell a good or service and accept bitcoin as payment.  Another option is to purchase bitcoin from an exchange.  There are many exchanges, the largest is Coinbase which has an app that is easily downloaded to your phone and linked to a bank account.  To download your wallet click this link.

Bitcoin ATM’s are popping up all over the world which allow patrons to insert cash and receive bitcoin or vice versa.  The ease of entry is ever increasing and doing business with bitcoin is easier now then ever before.

Bitcoin Explained: What is the future of bitcoin?

This cryptocurrency has the ability to change the way the world does business.  The unbanked around the world, those without verifiable account balances or credit histories can now acquire the freedoms of doing business which they were previously kept from.  People who can’t set up a bank account, get a credit card or live in places banks don’t want to be are now bankable.  Anyone with a cell phone (and yes, those without bank accounts often have a cell phone) can make transactions quickly and easily from their device.

Think of the impact this will have in countries where women or minorities are unable to have a bank account and cannot freely do business because of this fact.  People everywhere now have a means to transact with others.  The website BTCjam.com offers bitcoin backed micro loans so that those with bitcoin can help finance businesses and projects of people worldwide.  Bitcoin creates so much opportunity for people everywhere.

Bitcoins are becoming widely accepted by individuals and businesses alike.  You can buy just about anything you might need using bitcoin.  Companies like Overstock, Amazon, Virgin and Expedia now take bitcoin as payment.  If you use Bitcoin to buy Starbucks to save 20% or use it at Target and save 10% for example.  Some businesses give you a discount for using bitcoin.  Companies like Gyft sell gift cards to over 200 different retailers all of which can be purchased with bitcoin.

No one can read the future and tell us exactly what the next few years hold for bitcoin.  As it currently stands the European Union has decided that bitcoin will be untaxed.  In the United States bitcoin is seen as a commodity.  Its use and acceptance is reaching the tipping point.  We live in exciting times.

For those that are new to bitcoin I hope this article was informative and cleared up some of the questions you may have had.  If you found the article informative share it with your friends and family that may also have questions about this cryptocurrency.

Meatless Monday

Eight years ago, after watching the documentary Earthlings, I made the decision to make Meatless Monday an every night occurrence by becoming a vegetarian. At the time I didn’t know any other vegetarians. Friends and family were confused as to why I would give up meat. They joked I would not be able to resist bacon for more than a week. I was on a new path. My energy levels increased, I was focused and not turning back.

I noticed that my food budget began going father, eating a plant based diet was less expensive then buying meat for each meal. This got me thinking about how affordable eating healthy could be. If I could save so much money changing my diet I was curious as to why the price of meat was to high. The fact is livestock requires so much more food, water, land, and energy than plants to raise and transport.

The environmental impact food production has on our planet is one reason I have continued my vegetarian lifestyle.

A Case For Meatless Monday

In America, on average we eat 270.7 pounds of meat per person a year. That is more than almost every other country except Luxumbourg. There are quite a few resources that are consumed to get that piece of meat on the table. Meat eaters consume 160% more land resources than people who eat a plant-based diet.

Meatless Monday

A case for Meatless Monday – What’s the fuss about?

Climate control regulators have been focusing on the beef industry as the leading contributor of methane gas production in the world. Cows, sheep, goats, yaks and giraffes acquire nutrients from a plant-based diet by fermenting it in a specialized stomach prior to digestion. The byproduct of this fermentation is methane. This methane gas has twenty times the heat-trapping ability as carbon. One cow can produce approximately 100 kilograms of methane gas which would be like you or I burning 235 gallons of gasoline in our car.

Livestock in the U.S. also produce 2.7 trillion pounds of manure each year. That’s about ten times more waste than was produced by all the American people. This waste can and has in many instances leeched into the water supply.

Meatless Monday

With more than 17 billion livestock in the world huge amounts of water are utilized to irrigate the grains and hay fed to the animals. It takes 6+ pounds of feed to make one pound of beef, 3.5 pounds for pork and 2 pounds for chicken. 1/3 of the crops grown worldwide go to feed animals.

The water it takes to produce one ton of beef is equilivant to filling your bath tub 140,000 times says the Pacific Institute. That breaks down to 53 gallons of water per burger. In California for example it takes 2,464 gallons of water to produce one pound of beef according to the Water Education Foundation. To put that in perspective it takes 25 gallons of water to produce one pound of wheat. With California and many other states and nations in a drought this is something to reflect on.

The United States Geological Survey reports that 40 percent of fresh water used in the U.S. is used for livestock while 13 percent was used for domestic purposes. When a person chooses to switch to a plant based diet they will save 162,486 gallons of water annually. Switching to a plant-based diet or reducing the amount of meat in your diet is by far the most important choice you can make to save water.

There are also issues with the humane treatment of livestock. The contribution the meat industry is adding to deforestation. The hormones and antibiotics used on our meat are also a concern. According to an analysis of U.S. Food and Drug Administration data by the Johns Hopkins University’s Center for a Livable Future, 80 percent of the antibiotics sold in 2009 were for use on livestock and poultry, and only 20 percent was for human medical use. Our oceans are being over-fished, devastating our marine ecosystems. There are a multitude of concerns to deal with.

A case for Meatless Monday – So what’s the solution?

A popular trend call “Meatless Monday” has begun. “When a family of four takes meat and cheese off the menu one day a week, it’s like taking their car off the road for five weeks or reducing their daily showers by three minutes” states the Environmental Working Group.

A case for Meatless Monday – But meat is essential to a healthy diet.

Unlike essential vitamins and minerals the body needs to functional optimally there are no essential proteins. There are essential amino acids the body needs which can be converted into protein for the body and there are plant and legumes that supply these nutrients to our bodies.

There are plenty of plant-based items that provide protein to our bodies. Hemp tops the charts as it can produce up to 293 pounds of usable protein per acre which is more than seven times more protein per acre than meat.

Skipping the meat is not only environmentally friendly it could improve your personal health. For many meat is an important aspect of their diet providing iron, zinc and vitamins B-12, B-6 and niacin to the body. Inversely scientific evidence is associating the high meat consumption levels with a wide range of health problems including obesity, cancer (for the most up to date information on the over 7,000 clinical studies of the links between diet and cancer, visit the World Cancer Research Foundation and National Cancer Institutes websites), cardiovascular disease and type-2 diabetes.

The American Cancer Society advises people to limit consumption of red meat and all processed meats. If you are eating red meat you should limit your consumption to 2-3 small portions per week and no more then 3 ounces of meat at a sitting.

You might be thinking what will I serve for dinner if I don’t serve meat? We have the solution. Sign up for our 9 irresistible vegetarian recipes and our weekly update which includes new recipes for you to try. Click here to subscribe: Our Wellness Revolution

The bottom line is our demand for animal based products is diverting precious resources like land, water and fossil fuels to produce farmed animals instead of feeding the estimated billion plus people that are malnourished in the world. Everyone has the ability to positively impact our environment. We can change the environment one meal at a time. Consider taking on the challenge of Meatless Monday.

Toxic Chemicals Your Body Is Absorbing

There are over 10,000 chemicals that are unregulated and untested in the cosmetic industry. Despite these chemicals not having been proven safe, they are used in everyday items we apply to our body. Worse than that, some of these chemicals are used in industrial cleaning products. Lets look at the toxic chemicals your body is absorbing and how to avoid them.

One of the most commonly used chemicals is sodium laurel sulfate. It is the component that creates the sudsy, bubble lather that people believe cleans their skin. It’s actually corrosive. So it does clean your skin but in a way that strips your skin of all its protection. Our skin is our largest organ so it is absorbing thousands of chemicals a day. If you can not eat the product, you may want to rethink putting it on your body. The average women puts over 500 chemicals on her body each day through the products she uses. Your body absorbs these chemicals transdermally and then has to process them as toxins. To find out which cosmetics are safe to use, visit: safecosmetics.org or the environmental working group at ewg.org

Toxic Chemicals Your Body Is Absorbing

Toxins build up in the body over time. These toxins can lead to weakened immune function, hormone or reproductive issues and cancer. When we stop to think about the cumulative effect of all the chemicals we place in and on our body daily, we should be alarmed. Switching from toxic products to natural products is one way we can detoxify our lives. Since our skin is constantly losing mositure throughout the day, we rehydrate by slathering lotion on us that contains toxic chemicals. It is important to stay hydrated and moisturize your skin as it aids in warding off fine lines, wrinkles and scaly crocodile looking skin. We want to do it with good products. We love coconut oil. Coconut oil is a supremely diverse food which holds many health benefits. We can eat it, cook with it and it is extremely moisturizing to the skin. A good rule of thumb is to moisturize within 3 minutes of pat drying because the pores quickly shrink. Now that we know how to identify the toxic chemicals your body is absorbing through products put on our skin lets make an effort to detoxify our lives. Visit SafeCosmetics.com and learn more about the chemicals found in everyday products.

Action steps to get rid of the toxic chemicals your body is absorbing: Now that we know the toxic chemicals your body is absorbing and how to avoid them, begin throwing away the toxic products in your home. Try using coconut oil instead of lotion to decrease the number of toxic chemicals your body is absorbing.

In the comments, let us know what your favorite non toxic products or substitutes are.

Money Can Buy Happiness

We have all heard the phrase “money doesn’t buy you happiness” and that is sort of true. Money can buy happiness because it is a tool; it is neither good nor bad and has no meaning but that which we place on it. If we agree money doesn’t buy us happiness, we shift our focus from those green pieces of paper to the logical conclusion that we create our own happiness. Having money can free up your time; when we have time freedom we are able to do the things we enjoy, and doing what we enjoy creates happiness.

Chasing money will only keep you in the rat race. We are not suggesting having money and being wealthy is a bad thing, quite the contrary. Remember money can buy happiness. When we have lots of money, we are able to make a positive impact on our communities and the lives of those we care about. People who are “rich” can help more people then those who are broke. We should all strive to be financially fit and create a life we love.

To do this we need to come fully alive. Money Can Buy Happiness

This became my reality after venturing out of the corporate world and into entrepreneurial endeavors; I’ve never looked back. Money Can Buy Happiness

There is a super cliche saying that states, if you love what you do you will never work a day in your life. Well that is simply not true. The fact is you will probably work harder because you are passionate about what you are working to accomplish. Lori Greiner stated it best. Money Can Buy Happiness

The best part of being an entrepreneur is you are paid in direct correlation to how many people you help on a daily basis. When you help enough people get what they want, you will get what you want. If you offer a product or service that provides a solution to other peoples problems, you have a winning idea and stand to make a lot of money. Feel good about being a solutionist; your reward is money.

There is no evidence to suggest that buying material goods will makes us any happier. We may feel a moment of fleeting pleasure about our purchase. Now think about buying a trip somewhere and investing time with friends and loved ones; those are the moments that will create lasting happiness. In this example money can buy happiness.

In America, it seems there is an epidemic of retail therapy, a way to mask the issues we are facing. If you are in a place where you’ve created debt, a place where you have more month left than money, it is time to take responsibility for the situations you find yourself in. When we speak poorly about others, including creditors, and constantly shift blame, our words and actions speak more to our character than the person you are attacking. Money Can Buy Happiness

Money Can Buy Happiness

Everyone has to take responsibility for their contribution to the situation they find themselves in; you always have a choice. Your intentions create your experience. You are your habits. To make the most of the money you have, here are some tips:

Know your net worth Money Can Buy Happiness
Before you buy anything else, pay off outstanding debts
Before making big financial decisions, sleep on it
Diversify your assets Money Can Buy Happiness
Make investments Money Can Buy Happiness

Money has meaning when it gives you the freedom to live an inspired life. To do that, we’ll need to dig deep, make new rules, and build true wealth. We are here to make sure we do just that; now let’s get out there and pursue the passions that make us happy and make a lot of money in the process. Money Can Buy Happiness

Action step: Take a good look at your financial situation. Create a budget and live within it. Remember money can buy happiness.

Women In Business

I want to talk with the ladies for a moment. As women in business we have an advantage over the fellas. It is not about competing or using our sexuality, it is just a fact of the industry. The Direct Selling Association (DSA) did a tally and found that about 78% of direct sellers are from women in business. With such a high percentage of women starting businesses in the industry the question is “Why are women great network marketers?” women in business

The simple answer is this industry focuses on our strengths of multitasking, nurturing relationships, communication and full-filling our desire to balance work and home life. It makes sense that direct selling is a woman dominated industry because networking comes so naturally to us. We can attain our professional goals making a full-time income while working part-time. Being able to stay at home to support our families gives us peace of mind. We are able to have the best of both worlds.

Women in business can get to the heart of an issue and figure out another persons “WHY” quickly. We are programed to be nurturing and relationship orientated. We tend to share information a lot more freely. Through open communication we can learn things from friends in a matter of minutes that men (no offense guys) wouldn’t figure out for months. We would all love to have more active people in our organizations and the bottom line is people don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care. women in business

We all have the same 24 hours in a day to accomplish all that we set out to accomplish. Typically men take the corporate path while women tend to focus on personal branding. Generally women function on emotions and building relationships while men function on logic and the techniques of the business. women in business

When we start our business we have the opportunity to brand ourselves as we choose. Branding can be done corporately or personally.women in business

Also, women can easily approach both sexes with a natural non-intimidating approach to communicating. Sometimes women get intimidated by men pitching them and men tend to be more open when approached by a female. When a man approaches another man there may be the tendency to challenge each other or to square up. Instead of being in the competitive mindset as women we look at motivating, encouraging and being creative with others. In life we are either going to influence or be influenced, it’s all about the approach.women in business

Our mission is to empower and educate men and women to pre-sue their unique passions and utilize their talents in this business. Men and women have have different skill sets and luckily we can work together to make a big impact. The fact is everyone wants to be a part of something bigger than themselves, they want to know a secret and they want to feel special. When we hone in on these three points we can help men and women build their dreams in this business. women in business

Now fellas since you couldn’t resist reading this forward to an influential woman in your life and ladies keep building those relationships, nurturing the team and building your legacy. women in business

Dominate Social Media

We live in the information age and things move quickly. With the evolution of social media, we have the ability to reach people like never before. The key to dominate social media is to be consistent because people do business with those they know, like and trust. We have but a split second to capture a potential customer’s attention. Here are some tips I have learned along the way to make navigating Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest a little easier. dominate social media

Each platform gives you the opportunity to share your ‘why’ in the form of a brief bio. This is your chance to connect with your audience. Be sure to include who you are, what you do and how it brings value for the other person. Keep your bio short and to the point. Your bio should include a link back to your personal website for more info. Make sure your website lists all of your social media handles so people can easily find you. dominate social media

Social media outlets are the most influential platforms of the century. Having a profile is not enough. Building rapport with other organizations and honing strategic partnerships can explode your business. dominate social media

Dominate Social Media

Target your market. It is important to know your ideal customer and trust me its not everyone. Are you looking to capture organizations, a particular age demographic or a niche market? Targeting your market does not mean excluding people that do not fit your criteria from buying from you. It is a guide to allow you to focus on the people that are mostly likely to buy your product and share it with others, building your customer base. dominate social media

Social networks like Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest have changed the game for search engines. They have introduced additional social search signals that can be used for ranking content to your target audience. Social search refers to search engines using signals such as the number of social media shares of a link to determine how that link ranks for a given keyword.

There demographic of Facebook‘s 1.28 billion monthly users is vast. If you want to reach 15-34 year olds they are most active on Facebook from 9-10pm so post during those times. Keep posts short, 27% more sharing happens when a post is three lines or less. We want people to repost our info to friends so keep on point. One liners typically get the best response rates. People want to be engaged so ask questions that create conversation. If you post outside normal business hours which are considered from 9-4 there is a 20% increase in engagement. Fridays are the highest traffic days on Facebook, so it’s a great day to post. Comment on other pages where your target audience is already having conversations, lay the ground work and build rapport. If you host live events, post lots of photos and encourage your friends/followers to tag themselves. When they tag themselves, they will voluntarily be sharing your content with their friends causing a ripple affect. A great way to increase traffic to your page is by offering a special or exclusive offer; the sky is the limit on this. Ads are becoming more widely used on this platform. Slowly, Facebook will increase advertising including: full-motion video ads and image ads on its Instagram photo-sharing service. dominate social media

Twitter is great as you get up to the minute info; it could be called the ‘real time social networking’ site. A key to Twitter is to tweet in intervals. All tweets have to to be 140 charters or less. Engaging others through replying to their tweets builds your community. While it is great to follow lots of people and hone valuable information on Twitter, you must also grow your own base of followers. This is known as your Twitter reach. To make your tweets as visible as possible, avoid putting @USERNAME in the very beginning of your tweets. Adding the @USERNAME to the very beginning will make your tweet viewable only in the Twitter streams of people who follow you and the user to whom you’re tweeting. Hashtags are widely used on Twitter as well. A ‘#tag’ makes searching key words easy. You can dominate a hashtag so that when people search a key word your brand is the first to be featured. Selecting a hashtag for your own event will be beneficial in a couple of ways: During the event, people often use the hashtag while live-tweeting, i.e. tweeting what they see/hear in real-time. The hashtag will tag and aggregate the event’s tweets, building an online conversation around the event. Make your tweets useful resources so people need you. You are what you tweet. People will want to follow you if they think they will get value from your tweets. Avoid making your Twitter account a purely promotional tool. The goal is to get people to your personal page and viewing your products. Make a decision on how much time you want to devote to this platform as it can be a time-sucking activity.

Twitter is redesigning its profile and soon it will look like a merger of Facebook and Pinterest. Twitter has announced it will be gradually making changes to the timeline, mobile updates and they will have bigger photos. There are also rumors of the imminent death of @-replies and hashtags. Users will be able to pin or highlight key pieces of information to the profile of your newsfeed. We will now be able to add multiple photos to the platform and tag up to 10 people in these photos.

I didn’t know this until recently: Pinterest is the 4th largest traffic driver worldwide. People spend more money on Pinterst then any of the other social media sites. On average people will spend $68 on Twitter, $80 on Facebook and $179 on Pinterest. People use Pinterest to shop and buy online. The difference is that 70% of people on this platform are looking for brands and products. Many think it’s about moms (the average Pinterest user is 35-50) at home finding projects to do, but having a presence on Pinterest can effectively spread the word about your business. In fact, 80% of the content on Pinterest is repinned, which means your message could go viral quickly. The key with Pinterest is to create content unique to the Pinterest platform which will increase brand visibility and get more sales. Info-graphics, checklists, tutorials, teaser text-which drives traffic back to your site and videos are the most shared on Pinterest. Early morning or late at night is the best time to post to your page. The most people are on Pinterest Saturday mornings. dominate social media

I understand this can be a lot to digest and you may be thinking, who has time for all this? If you are doing all of these, an easy way to manage all of your sites in one place is through HooteSuite. They offer a free program to maximize your presence on social media and cut the time you spend daily on each site. It is better to do one thing really well then to do three things in a mediocre fashion. If taking on multiple social media sites feels daunting, start with one and master it; you can always expand your reach. You can see now how important it is to know your customer, what they need and where you can find them to connect. Now let’s share something we learned here with a friend on one of these social media platforms! dominate social media

How To Get More People Involved

We all have the same 24 hours in a day to accomplish all that we set out to accomplish. We would all love to have more active people in our organizations. The question is how do we go about getting more individuals actively involved. Initially, you may consider starting a mentoring program within your organization, which will allow new members to partner with other like minded individuals and learn the ins and outs of the organization in a hands on manor.
